Kyiv residents honor cleanness

Nobody will argue, that Kyiv is rich for different monuments and constructions – even the most exquisite art lover will find something to like. There is one amusing monument in Kyiv, that has no analogues in the world. Kyivans respect order and historical past so much, that they’ve decided to install a monument to garbage truck of the 60-th. “Different people needed, every person’s important” – this phrase is known from childhood. But society dictates its rules, and it’s considered that the noble professions are lawyer, doctor, teacher or engineer. You remember your answer for question: ”Who will you be when you grow up? ”. Unlikely that someone planned to be a garbage man. Like it or not, this profession successfully exists. Its representatives fulfill no less important function then, for example, accountant or programmer. Therefore Kyivans decided to pay attention to trivial but irreplaceable work. In year 2004 workers of sanitary cleaning service were pleased by an event – on 2, Gazoprovidna st. was installed a monument for the reason of 35 year anniversary of Kyivspectrans (organisation that takes care of garbage removal), and also 10 year anniversary of Ukrainian sanitary cleaning service trucking company association foundation. What is this monument displaying? A model of 60-th truck is standing on monument, garbage truck KO-413. Below hanged plate, where is written, what and why installed here. Nowadays you won`t see such trucks on the streets anymore, all rarity trucks are replaced by new ones. But that’s for the best. As mentioned by Kyivans of older generation, to bare the sound of KO-413 going on a street or going into yard for a garbage patch was very hard. Clattered giants informed Kyivans about their arrival from a distance, and those who wanted to get rid of a bag or two of garbage caught up to arranged spot. Integrally, Kyivspectrans felt nostalgic and decided to memorise irreplaceable at its time truck and installed corresponding monument. Unique monument was installed with purpose to remind of existence of such profession as garbage man and of course raise its prestige in eyes of Kyiv citizens and guests. Ghost stations of Kyiv metropolitan

For one or another reason the building of metro stations stops, projects get frozen, and passengers get bored in trains during long passage through tunnels. At present time there are three “ghost stations” on a Green subway line: “Lvivs’ka brama”, “Telychka” and “Gertsena”. “Lvivs’ka brama” is placed between Golden Gates and Lukyanivs’ka stations, and geographically located under Lvivs’ka square. Building of the station began in 1991, but in five years the project had been stopped because of the lack of finances and impossibility to reconstruct Lvivs’ka square, where the subway station exit was planned to be. Now the government promises to finish construction as soon as possible – work of one more station would have much ease the transport junction. The underground tunnel is almost campleted, and the main problem is development of escalators and outward part of subway. Gertsena subway station had to appear between Lukyanivs’ka and Dorogozhychi stations, but project plans remained just plans. The station was named in honor to Russian writer Alexander Gertsen, since the station exit was planned to be near the street of the same name. Overwhelming amount of passengers, that could have been using the station in perspective, were workers from Kyiv motorcycle factory. However in 90-th, when the construction of “Gertsen” station began, factory activity slowed down and soon ended its existence. Thus the need of another station dropped away, for reasons of economy. There was another variant of the station’s name – “Zagorevskaya”, after the name of a region where it was planned to be built – Zagorevshchyna. There are hopes that the subway station building will be restored, as not far away a new living complex will appear soon. Almost the same story as with “Gertsena” happened with “Telychka” station – it became unprofitable to open a station between “Vydubychi” and “Slavutich”, and the project that began in the early 90th was suspended in two years. The government announced that they don’t plan to renew the construction. (Its name the station became from) The territory, where the station had to be located – Nyzhnia Telychka gave the name of the station. There was also another name option – “Naddnipryanska”. On some maps in subway trains, stations “Lvivska brama” and “Telycka” are marked with dashed line – it’s like they exist, but at the same time they don’t. How long it will take for them to start functioning – is unknown. Fairy indwellers of Landscape alley

Every time the weekend approaches, we wonder – where to go for a nice walk? Although Landscape alley is not the most unique place for the promenades, it remains one of the most attractive ones. The history of Landscape alley starts since the 80-th of the past century. Here should be mentioned the architect Avraam Miletskiy, as the one who started to establish this place for walks. Among other famous buildings, made upon his projects are: Kyiv central bus-station, Glory square assembly, memorial complex at the Baykove cemetery, couple of hotels, memorials, and few projects, which didn’t get chance to be brought to life. As for Landscape Alley, it was first planned to become a part of the national park (conservancy area), but this idea has been accomplished just partly. Now the Alley is only a path adjoined by playground, rest area, and flowerbeds spreading from National Museum of Ukrainian History to Bolshaya Zhytomirskaya street. National park was supposed to include Museum of the 19th century urban development and fork crafts, Archeology museum and AS USSR Archeology Institute. Unfortunately, only Landscape alley was built out of this scale project. 2009 became a remarkable year for the Alley, bringing the decision of building a playground there. To say that it’s a unique place for games means to say nothing. Many Ukrainian masters had been working on its appearance, and has turned this little park zone to a real fairy tale! Mosaic wall, picturing children faces, fountains with zebra and toothed elephant, blue cat and green rabbits with big opened mouths, where people love to take photos, and other numerous animals and fairy creatures, brought to life by talented sculptors – all this is delighting the eye of every guest of Landscape Ally. Looking more attentive, one can notice here personages of Luis Carroll’s book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. There is a children slide there, stylized after this fairy-tale. In 2011 group of Kyiv sculptors contributed to Landscape Alley beautification, due to the project “Kyiv Fashion Park” - they added creatively decorated benches and installations to the walk-place. The Ally had been surrounded by many disputes: some time it was at a risk of privatization or removal. But not long ago this place has got the status of inviolable territory, thus everyone has opportunity to come for a walk and spend a nice time here. No matter how brightly we are trying to describe the beauty of this little park, it probably doesn’t reflect even a part of its magical atmosphere. Gogol memorial places in Kyiv

History and culture of Ukrainian people have found its wide reflection in the art work of the great Ukrainian writer Nikolay Vasilievich Gogol. He lived and worked both in Russia and Ukraine. Nikolai Gogol visited Kyiv several times. For the tirst time he came here in 1827, during his spring holidays in Nezhyn Gymnasium, together with his friend Belousov, who owned a house in Podol area. Young Gogol was deeply impressed by the beauty of the city. For the second time Gogol came to Kyiv in 1835. This time he stayed in Pechersk area, at the apartment of his friend, university professor M.Maksimovich. Gogol’s favourite place was the terrace on Andreyevskiy hill, from where he could pleasantly enjoy the view of Dnepr river and Podol. The writer’s last visit to Kyiv took place in 1848, on his way from abroad. During this visit he stayed in the house #2 on Nicolskaya street (now Ivana Mazepy street). The writer has artistically described the Dnepr river and people’s everyday life in Kyiv in his novel “Fearful vengeance”. And his other novel “Viy” has a description of Kontraktova square and Kyiv seminary in Podol area. Kyiv was also mentioned in the story “Taras Bulba”. To memorize the great writer, one of the main streets in Kyiv was named after him – Gogolevskaya street. One of the biggest kiev libraries on Bolshaya Vasilkovskaya street (former Krasnoarmeyskaya street) also bares the writer’s name.
